In April, we had a Filigree Workshop with Lynette Andreasen!

Filigree is an ancient metalworking technique with finely twisted gold or silver wires.

Below are some of Lynette's beautiful filigree flowers with pearls. To see more of Lynette's work, click here.

We learned how to twist and bend wires in the old Yemenite tradition. Lynette showed us a neat trick. In order to prevent the tiny fine silver wires from melting, she heats the wire inside an altoid tin!

We also had a second workshop at ASU with Fred Zweig on Nunome Zogan, otherwise known as Damascene, which is a Japanese overlay technique on steel.

Here, Fred is showing us how to make "tooth" marks in the steel in preparation for the overlay, using chasing tools that Fred made specially for the workshop.

Visiting Artist

The Metals Club at ASU was thrilled to have visiting artist Victoria Altepeter come and give a lecture and hands on workshop on patinas on September 20! Victoria recieved her BFA in Metals at Northern Arizona University, and her MFA in Metals at Arizona State University. She is currently teaching in Metals at NAU. Her work has been featured in the Lark book Wrap, Stitch, Fold and Rivet, Lark book 500 Silver Objects and Libro de Anillos, a Spanish book on rings.

Victoria gave a lecture about her work to students at ASU, then gave a demo on many different ways to apply patinas to metal.

There is a patina that involves fuming with ammonia and pickle juice!

Here's how it turned out with the pickle juice! A nice green!

Later in the day students had the chance to try some of the patinas. Everyone had a lot of fun with it!

Susanna Speirs heads up the Metals Program at California State University Long Beach.  She will be covering mold making for casting, electroforming and plastics, as well as cast pewter in a platinum cured silicone mold and plastic in a tin cured mold. The molds would cover the range from inexpensive to costly.

Michael Dale Bernard teaches at California State University Long Beach.  He will be covering  setting up for powder coating in a small studio, and with a little prep work, students will be allowed to produce their own samples and spray a couple of colors.
