The Metals Club at ASU was thrilled to have visiting artist Victoria Altepeter come and give a lecture and hands on workshop on patinas on September 20! Victoria recieved her BFA in Metals at Northern Arizona University, and her MFA in Metals at Arizona State University. She is currently teaching in Metals at NAU. Her work has been featured in the Lark book Wrap, Stitch, Fold and Rivet, Lark book 500 Silver Objects and Libro de Anillos, a Spanish book on rings.

Victoria gave a lecture about her work to students at ASU, then gave a demo on many different ways to apply patinas to metal.

There is a patina that involves fuming with ammonia and pickle juice!

Here's how it turned out with the pickle juice! A nice green!

Later in the day students had the chance to try some of the patinas. Everyone had a lot of fun with it!

Susanna Speirs heads up the Metals Program at California State University Long Beach. She will be covering mold making for casting, electroforming and plastics, as well as cast pewter in a platinum cured silicone mold and plastic in a tin cured mold. The molds would cover the range from inexpensive to costly.

Michael Dale Bernard teaches at California State University Long Beach. He will be covering setting up for powder coating in a small studio, and with a little prep work, students will be allowed to produce their own samples and spray a couple of colors.

NC Black Co. Engraving Workshop

ASU Metals Club is providing an engraving workshop by the

NC Black Co., funded by USG!

The workshop will be held on March 14th and 15th from 9:00am

to 5:00pm. The workshop has filled but there is a waiting list for

anyone who is still interested.

A free artist lecture will be on March 14th at 5:00pm in the

Art Building room 220, and will be open to the public!

Here's a description of the workshop:

NC BLACK Co. and Le Graveur de Vol collaborated and have invented the AFFORDABLE Engraver’s Ball Vise – for $130.00! Now Hand & Hammer Engraving have become cost effective for beginners to learn. Now students can make a minimal investment to learn the basics of hand & hammer engraving from Master Engraver Les Bryant. This new equipment will allow novice engravers to get the basic skills and techniques of engraving to embellish jewelry, enamels, knives or small sculptural forms. A basic kit of the vise, hammer, gravers, handles and template can run as low as $245.00! All tools will be provided for this workshop and NO PURCHASE is necessary to take the class.

Students will learn about the three most common gravers, learn how to shape and sharpen them and layout techniques for engraving designs upon metal. Beginning hand and hammer techniques will be taught on copper plates using border techniques, such as Ric Rac and Nic & Dot, how to cut straight and curved lines, as well as creating background textures, and some relief work. Students will layout a monogram of their initials to engrave and will learn to use a bright cutter to further embellish their work. They will engrave one bracelet blank and form it. The basics of mid or deep relief engraving, stone setting techniques that include flush setting and bead setting will be covered. These techniques will require the use of a flex shaft as well as NC BLACK Co.’s engraving equipment.

Last Night, Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010 at 7 p.m, the ASU Metalworking area was featured on PBS Channel 8 Arizona ArtBeat.

Ted Simons hosted an exploration of the work of metal artists from Arizona State University’s School of Art. The feature focuses on the current Night Gallery Exhibition: Small Metals -- Big Ideas. The feature includes interviews with artists as well as a studio visit.

Anodizing Workshop

A few weeks ago, ASU Metals had Bill Seeley from Reactive Metals Studio come to give us an anodizing demo. Seeley walked us through various techniques of anodizing niobium and titanium, and we got to see some of his own work as well!

Here Seeley is, showing us how to paint color on metal with a sponge.

As a side note, now here at ASU we have our own anodizing equipment!

Cub Scout Etching Workshop at ASUMetals!

A few weeks back, some ASUMetals students, along with professor, Becky McDonah, had the opportunity to help volunteer for an etching workshop with a second grade Cub Scout group. We were able to help the scouts earn arrow point awards by etching little copper name plates and key chains.

Arrowmont 2010: Righteous Reliquaries for Ordinary Objects

An exciting workshop will be taking place this Summer at Arrowmont!

Mark your calendars: June 20-26.

Becky Mcdonah will be instructing a course titled "Rigtheous Reliquares for Ordinary Objects":

"...Create elaborate containers for those cherished items you keep tucked away, wrapped up in an old sock, or something that you interact with everyday. The focus of this workshop will be designing small containers that incorporate mechanisms from basic hinges to cradle hinges, bayonet closures and more… and we can’t leave out pressure fitting. Cold connections and entrapment will also be covered as we are working with found objects which may not be able to withstand heat. Surface treatments and embellishments will be addressed as well along with cutting glass for viewing options. Students will relate their design choices back to the items they choose to contain."

This is a great opportunity and sure to be tons of fun! Don't miss it!

OPENING RECEPTION MONDAY MARCH 8TH FROM 7-9PM

The show features handcrafted jewelry and sculpture utilizing an exciting and unique combination of precious metals and found objects. Works contain narratives relating to both past and present experiences, revolving around family history, personal relationships, memory, and domestic heirlooms. Viewers are encouraged to revisit their past, consider objects of personal historical significance, and reflect on their own relationships. Andreasen makes use of familiar found objects rich in history, such as antique silver platters, discarded flatware, and chandelier crystals; She embraces marks of use and wear while also incorporating delicate detail through the addition of hand embroidery, pearls, silk, and lace. This juxtaposition dually references past generations and intimate activities that held significance to the family. Each found object is carefully selected, and brings its own history to the work; The rust, scratches and dents all play an important role in the stories being told. It is Andreasen’s clarity of purpose and calculated execution which have allowed her to create this compelling collection of pieces that are accessible, yet also meaningful on an intimate, personal level: objects of significance that help identify the moments and memories of everyday life.

MFA Thesis Exhibition: Victoria Altepeter

ASU Masters of Fine Arts Candidate, Victoria Altepeter, will be opening her thesis show next week. Entitled Dynamical Balance, the show will run from March 23 - March 27.
The Opening Reception is Monday, March 23 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. In the Harry Wood Art Gallery in The Katherine K Herberger School of Art, Art Building.

The ASU Metalworking Department was proud to host the 3rd Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition, held October 6th-16th, 2008. The Exhibition consisted of eight universities from across the nation, incorporating work from undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty members from the participating departments. Each institution was responsible for jurying the work to represent their program. The exhibition was a great opportunity to educate, inspire and develop public and academic awareness in the field of metalworking as well as encourage interaction among metalworking departments on a national scale. It showcased a wonderfully diverse cross-section of what is happening in metals studios across the country.

Metalworking Merit Badges

On Saturday, December 6th, Arizona State University’s Metals Department hosted a Metalworking Merit Badge workshop for local Boy Scout Troop 630. The scouts learned many things about the properties of metal and how to work it at this hands-on event. For the tool making portion of the day, scouts made center punches out of tool steel and hardened and tempered them for lasting durability.

Next they went on to making belt buckles by using the jewelers saw to cut out designs in brass that they later soldered to their buckle plates that were formed by using the hydraulic press. After cleaning up the metal surface and using patina for coloration, each scout (and scout leader) had created their very own belt buckle.

It was a great opportunity for ASU’s Metalworking Department (including volunteers from the faculty, graduate and undergraduate levels) to interact with the community and give them a glimpse of one direction that is possible in the field of metals.

Metallink Blacksmithing Demo

On Saturday, Metallink members met at ASU's smithy for a blacksmithing demo by Tedd McDonah. Everyone created S-hooks from square stock, forging down tapers on the ends of the steel and twisting the metal with a wrench. Despite the heat, all had a great time smithing. Thanks, Tedd! Lauren McAdams, Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition in Metals
Artist's Reception: Monday, April 14, 7–9 p.m.

Choices, chance, and character explores the small moments we face when choosing to connect with others. Although elements of chance are not black and white, this work displays longing for simple answers to our most difficult problem…how do we find our match? Although the child-like solutions seem unsuitable, the viewer begins to question certain elements of their decision making paradigm. Adult realities and fantasies emerge from the simplicity of children’s games and communicating vessels. The honesty of a child at play hardens to a “frozen” scene of the choices ahead. Using traditional hand-crafted metalworking techniques in a sculptural sense turns recognizable objects into strangers. The viewer is invited to interact with the metal sculptures and consider their own method of connecting to those “characters” in their life.

Andy Cooperman (his work shown above) visited ASU last month for a belt buckle workshop sponsored by Arizona Designer Craftsmen. He gave a great lecture about his work and also demonstrated several techniques including the basics of fabricating a western style tang and loop belt buckle for workshop participants. Each participant was able to create their own buckle.

Patterned Metals

Last fall ASU students had the chance to take a course focused solely on patterning metals with Tedd McDonah. Tedd's expertise in this area was evident to the group, as we got the chance to see his work with patterned metals first hand. We learned how to create mokume gane and damascus steel billets, and were instructed on many different ways of patterning. The class entailed lots of hard work, but was completely worth it. 29th Annual Mesa Contemporary Crafts

We would love to see you at the opening reception for the Mesa Contemporary Crafts show! The exhibition space is beautiful and the show is always very good. This year is especially exciting as several ASU artists are participating, including; Victoria Altepeter, Lynette Andreasen, Jonathan Brown, Lauren McAdams, Becky McDonah, Tedd McDonah, and Clare Verstegen!

The reception starts at 6pm on January 25th.

"Highlighting the finest in contemporary crafts from around the country, the 29th Annual Contemporary Crafts exhibition has become a benchmark for innovation and quality. This year’s exhibition showcases 58 artworks by 21 artists from 20 states. These artists work in traditional craft mediums including ceramics, fibers, basketry, metals, wood, glass, jewelry, papermaking, and book arts.

Ceremonial Mace and Medallion

While rummaging through old file cabinets in her office the other day, Becky stumbled upon some old newspapers. In them she found this article about the Ceremonial Mace and Medallion that Dave Pimentel created for the University in 1982.

The mace and medallion are only worn/held by the president of the university.

This part of the article was particularly humorous.

We decided to track down where the Mace and Medallion are housed and ask if we could come to see them in person. The director of University Ceremonies, Melissa Werner, got back to us immediately and said she would love to have us come! So, we took a little field trip to the ASU Foundation and got to see and touch Dave's beautifully crafted work.

We had a great time and really appreciated being able to see Dave's work in person. We are glad that ASU is continuing his legacy, and that we can be a part of it.

"I am always collecting fun and interesting objects. My tendency to collect attractive objects comes from my own background growing up in Japan. The country is flooded with cute and odd trinkets. They captivate people and it creates a sort of consummerism in Japan. My country is obsessed with cute and fun oddities and this is somewhat a reflection into my own life. I am one of those people. My work is an explaination of this idea of consummerism.

I hope to continue pushing the idea of consumerism in the future. This is because we as a human race are all tied to our things. We are tied to rings, tied to jewelry, or even stuffed animals and other unecessary objects."

Strange Ways

"I have always been fascinated by human behavior. Observing other humans has made me realize how unique some of our behaviors are. I’m especially curious about our reactions to frustration or anxiety. It seems that these emotions can become physically painful, mimicking the sensation of needles in one’s eye. More curious how we deal with these emotions, finding solace in a medicated state of mind.

More recently, I have become interested in the way that humans interact with their environment. While we are a part of nature, we often react to it in entirely unnatural ways. I have found that rather than living with the natural world, we tend to destroy it, sterilize it, build structures upon it, and then attempt to recreate it in designated areas. I address these ideas in my work by using geometric and natural forms that occupy the same space, much like human structures and plants or insects do.

By creating these ideas in metal, I feel that it gives them structure, makes them more permanent and relatable. I hope that in viewing these pieces, people take the opportunity to consider their own emotions and reactions. I want people to think about these strange behaviors and the way that they make us uniquely human. "

2nd Annual Intercollegiate Metals Exhibition

Recently (October 8th-19th), we hosted our 2nd Annual Intercollegiate Metals exhibition in Gallery 100. Participating institutions included the following:

Bowling Green State University - Bowling Green, Ohio
Murray State University – Murray, Kentucky
Northern Arizona University – Flagstaff, Arizona
University of North Texas – Denton, Texas
Wayne State University – Detroit, Michigan

For a second time, the exhibition brought a variety of metals/jewelry communities together and received many favorable comments. It was an inspirational display of work from across the nation. The show exhibited 85 different pieces from 77 artists, and was a broad display of both techniques and aesthetics. This year, after some discussion, we came to the decision to have the juror select student work for awards.
Our juror was Jessica Calderwood (work pictured below). Jessica received her MFA in metalworking in 2005. Prior to graduate school she was resident artist at the prestigious John Michael Kohler Art Center in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Calderwood’s artwork has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and Great Britain in juried and curated shows. Her metalwork has been featured in Metalsmith Magazine (cover image), as well as numerous enameling books.

Awards were given to 4 student artists as follows:

As our first post, we would like to introduce our blog and it's contributors. We hope this blog will be a virtual history of our metals program at Arizona State University and will inform students, educators, metalsmiths, artists, and the general public about our endeavors. We also wish it to be a record of the individuals who are a part of the program and the work that they produce.

As for Introductions...

Victoria Altepeter

The metalwork that Victoria creates is inspired by the universe and the events occurring therein, it is wearable. It is her goal to make comprehendible the vastness of our universe, she sees ties between ourselves and the universe we are part of. She enjoys jewelry for the intimacy between object and wearer, for its permanence, and its portability. She sees the body as a moving gallery, the pieces moving through place and space just as astral bodies. She wishes to make permanent the impermanent in her pieces. As the sky and universe is constantly changing and expanding, light always shifting and traveling, she wishes to capture snapshots of these occurrences with in a precious material. She feels a deep connection to the history of metalworking and to the history of body adornment throughout the centuries. She uses patination to allude to time or place, and keeps forms as simple as possible to give the sense of wholeness, calmness or balance. She wishes the wearer/viewer to feel what she feels when she is creating this work- that of calm and balance- two things she is always searching for in her life.

Lynette Andreasen

Lynette makes wearable art jewelry that incorporates both metals and fibers. Her work is about human connection and interaction. She is interested in the exchanges that occur between individuals both intimate and casual, and the imprint these exchanges have on our lives. These exchanges can be physical, emotional, circumstantial, etc. She is interested in identity, cause and effect, and the individual in relation to the group. Her jewelry discusses these exchanges and relationships.

Jonathan Brown

Jonathan's works in small scale sculpture. Through his work Jonathan attempts to create other, smaller, more isolated worlds. These nano worlds are a place of imagination and escape. He often incorporates lenses in his pieces, which cause the viewer to peer into his distorted dream-like landscapes.

Lauren McAdams
Lauren McAdams work revolves around her fascination with personal relationships and the complexity of simple conversational interactions. She is constantly considering how an object can start a feeling that will force viewers to interact with each other. Her work also discusses relationships, specifically romantic relationships, and also communication.
